Four Heisman Trophy winners have won the Super Bowl’s MVP award. The most recent recipient was 1991 Heisman winner Desmond Howard, who helped Green Bay defeat New England, 35-21, in Super Bowl XXXI in New Orleans.
Howard won the Heisman mostly due to his receiving skills, but he didn’t catch a pass in the Super Bowl. Instead, he did his damage as a return man. Of course, that didn’t come as a surprise to those who follow college football. Remember this?
Against the Patriots, Howard was just as electrifying. When New England made the score 28-21 early in the third quarter, it appeared momentum had swung away from the Packers. But Howard quickly squashed that notion:
That was the last score of the game as Green Bay won the 1997 Super Bowl, 35-21. Howard finished with 90 yards on six punt returns (including a 34 yard return) and 154 yards on four kickoff returns, bringing his all-purpose yardage total for the game to a Super Bowl record-tying 244 yards. He is the only player to be named Super Bowl MVP based solely on his special teams performance.
