Part of the charitable mission of the Heisman Trophy Trust is to support efforts to provide greater opportunities to the youth of our country. In particular, the Trust loves programs that utilize athletics as a way to improve the daily lives of underserved children.
One such initiative takes place close to the trophy’s home, under the auspices of the New York branch of America SCORES.
America SCORES New York combines soccer, writing, creative expression and service learning to help empower students living in urban communities. Using the concept of teamwork as its unifying value, the organization inspires youth to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged students, and become agents of change in their communities.
America SCORES New York is currently partnered with 14 different public schools in the city, impacting over 600 students each year ages 5 to 18.
The after-school program uses the following Literacy in Action curriculum:
- SOCCER – Formation of school soccer teams to create a sense of belonging and provide an opportunity to be physically active, with students playing soccer for 4-5 hours per week.
- LITERACY – Soccer teams participate in 3 hours per week of writing workshops to develop literacy skills, practice self-expression and creativity and produce original works of poetry.
- COMMUNITY – America SCORES regularly bring teams and their families together for soccer games, poetry slams and service projects to celebrate student achievement and build community.
- THE RESULT – SCORES students are stronger, smarter happier and prepared to make a difference in their community.
The outcome of this curriculum is healthier, more confident and conscientious students who are motivated to succeed.
The Heisman Trust is proud to support America SCORES New York. Won’t you join us?
