The Buzz
Here’s what the pundits are saying about the Heisman race as we head into November…
— The Heisman race is as wide open as the national title hunt, writes David Wharton of the LA Times.
— According to Matt Brown of Sports on Earth, Jabrill Peppers of Michigan is college football’s ultimate weapon.
— Was Lamar Jackson’s late touchdown pass against Virginia his Heisman moment? asks FoxSports.com.
It was the perfect throw, at the perfect moment, at a time when his team absolutely needed it.
The throw might not have officially clinched Jackson the Heisman Trophy, but if and when he does win it, that play will be sure to end up at the top of his season’s highlight reel.
— Gridiron Now contends that Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen is not a Heisman candidate.
The Heisman belongs in the hands of playmakers. Quarterbacks and running backs touch the ball and have a significantly higher influence on the outcome of the game than defensive players do.
That’s not a knock on defensive players nor should it be taken as such. But let’s be honest: You get zero points for making a stop in a game.
— Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield is one of the hottest players in the country, writes NCAA.com.
— DeShaun Watson is dealing with a high bar set by others, writes Brad Senkiw.
“Personally, I feel like all the wins are big,” Watson said. “But it’s always good to especially go down there, primetime game at night, the whole world was watching, we haven’t won down there in 10 years. It was one of the best overall team wins.”
— Christian McCaffrey came back from injury to score three touchdowns against Arizona.
— How CBSSports.com ranks the Heisman race.
— Could a freshman QB be the SEC’s best hope at a Heisman?
— Utah supports Washington’s Jake Browning for the Heisman.
— Stewart Mandel’s Heisman top 5 includes San Diego State’s Donnell Pumphrey and Florida State’s Dalvin Cook.
Odds and Ends
— The Heisman Trophy paid a visit toPasco, Fla., this past weekend.
— Tim Tebow says his secret to his success is that he knows where his identity lies.
—Our condolences to the family of John Hickson his recent passing. Hicks was the Heisman runner up in 1973, the closest any offensive lineman has come to winning the trophy.
