Time for our weekly feature that rounds up the latest Heisman news and updates from around the media world.
The Buzz
The 2016 Heisman race is reaching its closing stages. Here’s what the pundits are saying heading into mid-November.
— Give these three quarterbacks some Heisman love, writes The Sporting News.
— Stew Mandel of FoxSports.com has his top 5 candidates.
Saturday’s rash of upsets left an even larger gap than before between Lamar Jackson and the rest of the field. And he didn’t even have that big a game himself.
— Baker Mayfield’s numbers are even better than a year ago, when he finished fourth in the Heisman.
— A history lesson on Earl Campbell for D’Onta Foreman, from the AJC.
— Jim Harbaugh is pushing Jabrill Peppers for the Heisman.
— Could Peppers shock with a late surge?
— A look at Saquon Barkley’s Heisman chances.
— Jalen Hurts for Heisman, just not this year, says the Tuscaloosa News.
Ultimately, it’s probably too soon – maybe just one year too soon – for Hurts to appear near the top of the ballot. The exception would be if he does magical things against Auburn. For that to be necessary, the Auburn game might have to be closer than Alabama fans would find comfortable. But even if Hurts isn’t on this year’s roster in New York, he’s likely to get there soon.
— Gridiron Now looks at who’s rising and who’s falling in the Heisman race.
— Is Ohio State’s Curtis Samuel a Heisman candidate?
— The odds are looking good for Lamar Jackson.
— Louisville has made a flip book to promote Jackson.
— USF coach Willie Taggart thinks his quarterback Quinton Flowers deserves Heisman consideration.
Flowers, who eclipsed B.J. Daniels’ 5-year-old USF single-game total yards record with 473 (and five touchdowns) in a 49-42 win Saturday at Memphis, is the first Bull to run for 1,000 yards and pass for 2,000 in the same season.
“You show me someone better,” Taggart said.
Odds and Ends
— The national finalists for Wendy’s High School Heisman have been named.
— Steve Spurrier will speak at the 2016 Dollar General Bowl Mayor’s Luncheon, which takes place at noon Dec. 22 at the Mobile Convention Center.
— Tim Tebow is optimistic about the Florida Gators under coach Jim McElwain.
— Tebow delivered a walk-off hit in the Arizona Fall League.
— Matt Leinart shared his thoughts on current USC quarterback Sam Darnold.
— The Billy Sims BBQ in Tulsa gave free meals to vets on Veterans Day.
