Video: Archie Griffin as a freshman
Save for a brief stretch during World War 2 and the Korean conflict, first-year freshmen were not eligible to play college football until 1972.
That was the year a tailback from Columbus named Archie Griffin appeared on the scene.
In just the second game of his freshman year, Griffin ran for a school record 239 yards. It was the start of a brilliant career that would see him amass an OSU record 5,589 yards and 26 touchdowns. He finished his freshman year with 867 yards and went on to win two Heismans, the only player to do so.
Today’s video from Sports Illustrated touches on the impact Griffin made as a 1972 freshman.
