Video: Doug Flutie honored by Ed Koch in 1984
Has it really been 34 years since Doug Flutie won the Heisman?
The Boston College quarterback broke up a long string of running back Heisman winners in 1984, throwing for 3,454 yards and 27 touchdowns on his way to capturing his school’s first Heisman.
We recently uncovered a video of Flutie and 15 other Heisman winners being honored by New York City Mayor Ed Koch at City Hall in 1984. Along with Flutie, also present are Jay Berwanger, the first Heisman winner, 1936 winner Larry Kelley, 1937 winner Clinton Frank, 1943 winner Angelo Bertelli, 1944 winner Les Horvath, 1948 winner Doak Walker, 1949 winner Leon Hart, 1950 winner Vic Janowicz, 1953 winner John Lattner, 1954 winner Alan Ameche, 1955 winner Howard Cassady and 1957 winner John David Crow.
“If only we could suit up all these great players in New York uniforms and send them out to Shea (stadium),” joked Koch. “Nobody would ever buy another ticket to the Meadowlands.”
The footage above is a bit raw, but enjoyable and worth a look.
