Video Spotlight: Roger Staubach’s 1963 highlights
The service academies of the United States have won five Heisman Trophies between them, but the last one came way back in 1963, when Navy quarterback Roger Staubach helped guide the Midshipmen to a dream season.
Known as “Roger the Dodger,” the junior led Navy to a No. 2 ranking and a berth in the Cotton Bowl, where he set records for pass completions (21-of-31) and yards passing (228). On the year, the Midshipmen posted wins over West Virginia, Michigan, Notre Dame and Maryland. Staubach completed 106 passes in 161 attempts for 1,474 yards, while earning consensus All-America honors, as well as the Maxwell Trophy and Walter Camp Memorial Trophy.
