Video Spotlight: When USCs (and Heismans) collided
The 1980 matchup between No. 20-ranked South Carolina and No. 4 Southern California in Los Angeles was not only the first-ever meeting between the two schools in football, it also featured two tailbacks who would go on to win the Heisman in back-to-back years.
For the Gamecocks, it was senior George Rogers who took home his program’s only Heisman that very season. On the other side of the ball, Trojan tailback Marcus Allen would win USC’s fourth Heisman the following year, 1981.
This contest saw the Trojans come out on top, 23-13. Rogers rushed for 141 yards, while Allen tallied 107 yards.
Here’s the tape of the game, with 1965 Heisman winner Mike Garrett providing color commentary.
